I have a very special Local Source for fine Western Red Cedar brought down from Vancouver Island, B.C. My Supplier has always only carried vertical-grained Old Growth KD Clear, in 2″ thick stock only, but he’s just started carrying a larger, timber-sized stock in #1 Select Tight Knot Timber Grade.
These salvaged logs (38″ across) are from trees killed in a fire in 1893 and have been standing dead ever since. Incredibly dry and stable after standing that long! This wouldn’t be considered Old Growth, but this nice stock has a much tighter grain than most WR Cedar found today.
