Overview of Our Deck Building Process

The design objectives were to expand the home’s outdoor living space and take advantage of a nice southerly view across San Diego. The deck’s main beam and posts are rough sawn western red cedar for appearance, while the ledger board on the house and floor joists are pressure treated Douglas fir. We use mostly stainless steel fasteners and connectors due to the corrosive nature of the new pressure treated material.

The decking material is 1×6 Ipe, screwed and plugged. The cable railing posts are 2×4 Ipe and the railing’s top cap is 1¼x6 Ipe. Stainless steel cable wire completes the railing. All of the pergola components are also western red cedar and the shade canopy material is bamboo.
